WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore Katrina Guillou scored in the 10th minute and freshman Lissa Rahkola made four saves to record her first career shutout as UNCW defeated Coastal Carolina, 1-0, in collegiate women's soccer action Thursday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks picked up their fourth win in five contests as they moved to 4-5-0 overall. The Chanticleers, meanwhile, slipped to 3-4-1 as they suffered their third straight setback.
Guillou tallied the only goal of the contest at the 9:58 mark, using a feed from sophomore Maddie McCormick to get past her defender before beating senior keeper Megan Spencer from 10 yards out for her third goal of the season.
The Chanticleers came within inches of tying the game later in the first half when a header from senior Amanda Clark on a goalmouth scramble in the 37th minute found the left post and stayed out.
Coastal Carolina had another chance to tie the game in the final minute of the contest, but Rahkola was able to dive and deflect a long-distance attempt from freshman Morgan Smith away from the goal.
UNCW held a 13-8 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by an 8-4 margin in the first half. The Seahawks also attempted eight of the 10 corner kicks awarded. Rahkola stopped all
