There are a lot of unsung heroes that quietly make positive differences in our communities each and every day. We found out about one this week.
One of our employees stopped by his children's elementary school and saw a member of the Highway Patrol on campus. The officer said he was there just to make a presence at the elementary school, and to check on things.
You might recall, our elementary schools in New Hanover County don't have full-time school resource officers this yea. But it seems that with a heightened sense of awareness regarding school safety these days, these troopers are stopping by when they can. They don't have a set schedule, and they aren't there all day. But they are pitching in to help fill the void.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear of other departments, or even non-law enforcement folks, stepping up and offering their assistance, too.
At a time when our politicians are still trying to figure out how to pay for providing full-time security in our schools, it's good to hear that some thoughtful Highway Patrol officers are stepping up and making a difference.
I'd love for you to share with us some of the unsung heroes you've witnessed doing good deeds in the community. It's your turn. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
