WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - More details are coming out regarding the future of the unemployment office in Columbus County. The office in Whiteville is one of several in the state selected to merge with another agency.
After reaching out to the regional manager and state officials with the Work Force Division, we never got any answers. So Tuesday, while Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker was in town, we asked her some questions.
According to Decker, the Work Force Division has had a significant reduction when it comes to federal and state money. She says that it's forced them to review all their operations so they can work more efficiently.
By the end of the year, the Whiteville unemployment office will consolidate with another agency in the county that does similar work.
Decker says that decisions are still being made, but regarding future mergers, she said, "There's an awful lot of state resources around the state. So where should we pair up with our community colleges? Where can we join offices where there are services related to make we're providing in work force support? That could prevent people from having to go to multiple locations. So we are evaluating all of that, with a focus on how do we improve service delivery."
Decker says they've launched a website called www.ncworks.gov, which provides some services without having to visit a local unemployment office.
