WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Newly re-instated New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger is already breaking the rules that were set for him Monday morning.
On Monday, the other county commissioners outlined a new set of guidelines Berger must follow if he wishes to remain on the board. The rules state that Berger will not be able to use county vehicles or have a county credit card. He must be on time to meetings and he's not allowed to abuse his email privileges by sending what commissioners called "rambling emails" to county staff.
Monday night, Berger was already breaking rules. The New Hanover County Commissioners were welcomed by Wrightsville Beach residents to a town hall meeting Monday. The meeting started at 6:30 p.m. Berger did not arrive at the town hall until after 8:00 p.m. The meeting had already ended when Berger showed up.
Berger said the other commissioners never informed him of the meeting that was to take place in Wrightsville Beach.
"I don't think this particular event is the only event that I was not apprised of and invited to," said Berger. "I think I was purposely left out of everything that has occurred in the last months."
Jonathan Barfield, a fellow county commissioner, said he wasn't sure how Berger missed the meeting.
"I'm not sure what communication went forward with Commissioner Berger about tonight's event," said Barfield. "Last week the word came out that he was re-instated so how up-to-speed he is on things, I'm not sure."
There is no word yet on whether Berger will be disciplined by the board of county commissioners for missing the meeting.
