LELAND, NC (WECT) – Rep. Mike McIntyre is speaking out in opposition to the ongoing crisis in Syria.
According to an article in the McClatchy Washington Bureau, fellow North Carolina Congressman Robert Pettinger said that he believes terrorists have the ability to kill hundreds of people in the United States using Syrian chemical weapons.
Pettinger, who is also the chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, expressed concerned that chemical weapons could be used to attack port cities like Wilmington or Charleston.
McIntyre said Monday that he's opposed to a military strike in Syria, but when it comes to threats to the national homeland, he says he's confident that the U.S. is prepared.
McIntyre said he meets with law enforcement officials and other national task force representatives on a regular basis to review potential threats and how to approach them.
"We have to be over-vigilant ourselves in protecting our homeland, working together, relying on our own intelligence and not relying on some other foreign country's intelligence or recommendations," said McIntyre. "I'm confident that we're doing everything we can at the national level to protect the interest of the United States."
McIntyre also said that he's encouraged that there may be an opportunity for diplomatic resolution when it comes to the situation in Syria. He hopes to get other nations involved so that the United States isn't working alone.
