WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority stopped a sanitary sewer overflow Wednesday. The overflow started around 2 p.m. as a result of a mechanical failure.
According to Mike McGill with the CFPUA, an air release valve failed on a force main. The overflow lasted for about an hour. An estimated 2.779 gallons of wastewater spilled into Whiskey Creek.
CFPUA Environmental Management staff members conducted water quality monitoring, and the spill was reported to the North Carolina division of Water Quality. The faulty valve was replaced and operations have returned to normal.
