PENDER and NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A 700-acre site that's in both Pender and New Hanover Counties could someday be a new home to a company.
Duke Energy Progress has selected the site for the 2013 Site Readiness Program, according to a news release on the company's website.
That means the site, part of which is in the Pender Commerce Park and the rest in vitamin manufacturing company BASF in New Hanover County, will be evaluated within the next four months to see which areas would be best for building and development.
Buildings that are intact on the BASF portion of the site could serve as temporary offices should an industry ever build on the land.
Duke will present its research to county officials in November, and when the site is ready, it will be marketed across the country to companies that want to expand or relocate.
"This site has tremendous possibilities," said John Nelms, Duke Energy's economic development manager for Pender and New Hanover counties, in a statement on Duke's website. "Not only does it have excellent road access and multi-lane connectivity to I-40, it is less than 10 miles from the Port of Wilmington and a short drive to the Wilmington International Airport.
