BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The crime rate in Brunswick County is on a steady decline, according to the North Carolina Department of Justice's annual crime report.
The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says the 2012 crime report shows a decrease in the county across the board last year and has shown a gradual and consistent decrease since 2008, which is the same time Sheriff John Ingram began serving the county as the sheriff.
"I don't believe the reduction in the crime rate can be attributed to any one thing," said Ingram. "It certainly is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community."
Ingram said an investigative task force made up of several agencies in the county had helped build camaraderie throughout Brunswick.
He went on to say the implementation of the Citizen's Academy and volunteer program has established "goodwill and trust between the Sheriff's Office and the community."
"We can't do our jobs without the help of the community," said Ingram. "And the vast majority of citizens in Brunswick County are committed to helping us keep our community safe."
