A fight to keep goats at a home on North Street in Agawam continued Monday. Alan and Suzanne Griffin went before a housing court judge in Springfield. The fight to keep the goats has been going on since at least 2006.
Part of their property is zoned residential and part of it is zoned agricultural. A town attorney said 15 goats were being housed on one acre of property which violates regulations. In 2012, the town proposed an agreement to limit the amount of goats on the property. Other parts of the settlement included a fence, timely disposal of manure and a time limit to get rid of any offspring.
The town of Agawam was trying to enter the property to take the goats while lawsuits were being settled. A lawyer representing Agawam said it was their intention to have a veterinarian determine the health of the animals before finding them another home.
Alan Griffin said he and his wife are disabled and they are being discriminated against. They said milk from the goats was required to treat a medical condition for Suzanne Griffin.
An organization contacted by the Griffins was looking for a temporary home from the goats. Deborah Chandler said her group, Western Massachusetts Goat Alliance, was working to find a farm close enough so the animals could continue to be milked.
Their home on North Street was put up for sale in June so they could look for another place to raise their goats in peace.
The judge said he needed to look more into the matter before handing down a decision.
Agawam Mayor Richard Cohen's office said they had no comment because the case was still in litigation.
