WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It was quite a welcoming ceremony when the Research Vessel Cape Hatteras came to town in March, making CFCC the new home for student research.
Now, it's time for the Cape Hatteras' inaugural cruise.
Monday, students will head out on a five day biology trip. Those aboard will focus on learning safety while working off shore.
They will learn where they should stand when gear is over the side--always wearing safety gear on deck (hard hat, life jacket). They will do basic drills, like abandon ship, man overboard and fire safety.
"As you can imagine the first trip is a huge undertaking. Instructors are focused on loading up on fuel, groceries and mobilizing all the equipment that will be deployed on the trip," said Marine Tech Chair, Jason Rogers.
He added that getting accustomed to all the new systems and the boat's size will be the biggest challenge but he says it's a great challenge to have.
The vessel leaves Wilmington at 10:30 a.m. and there will be a brief send-off ceremony for the crew at the CFCC dock.
