UNCW Press Release

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – UNCW scored twice in a 2:54 span to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat East Carolina, 3-2, in collegiate women's soccer action Friday at the ECU Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks picked up their first win of the season as they moved to 1-4 on the campaign. The Pirates, meanwhile, slipped to 2-2-1.

"This was a typical ECU-UNCW game," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "We always know it's going to be close. I do believe that over the past 10 years we have had eight one-goal games."

UNCW took a 1-0 lead late in the first half as sophomore Maddie McCormick put home a rebound opportunity in the 39th minute for her first goal of the season.

Freshman forward Lana Spitler leveled the score at 1-all at the 52:23 mark, taking a pass from fellow freshman Autumn Berry before racing behind the Seahawks defense and beating freshman keeper Liisa Rahkola with a shot into the right-hand corner of the net.

The Pirates would gain the lead just 4:01 after Spitler's tally as freshman Jenna Geist knocked home a rebound for her first collegiate tally.

Senior Nicole Costa started the Seahawks on the comeback trial in the 63rd minute, putting home a feed from sophomore Katrina Guillou to knot the score at 2-2.

Junior Stephanie Bronson netted the game-winner at the 64:54 mark when she collected a loose ball inside the box and put a shot into the left-hand side of the net for her first goal of the season.

UNCW enjoyed a 16-9 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by a 9-3 edge in the second half. The Seahawks were also awarded nine of the 11 corner kicks taken in the contest.

"After going up 1-0, I felt ECU did a great job putting us under pressure," said Cairney. "To go behind and storm back with two quick goals is a testament to our young team getting better.  We battled very hard tonight and we will get ready for a very talented NC state squad on Sunday. "

Both teams return to action Sunday. UNCW travels to Raleigh to face NC State in a 1 p.m. contest while ECU entertains George Washington in a 2 p.m. start.
