WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Shuttle officially started making it's rounds Friday evening. This is a first for the Wilmington community.
The shuttle will only run on Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. The shuttle is designed to give Wilmington residents an easy and economical way to travel to and from the downtown area.
Wilmington Shuttle representatives say, "We are excited to offer this new revolutionary service and finally provide a progressive and much needed safe, dependable and economical way of travel in the Wilmington area."
The Wilmington Shuttle will travel along the 601 bus route and connect several large apartment communities to downtown. Carolina Cove, Mill Creek, The Quads, Campus Walk, Clear Run, and Cape Cottages will all have stops on the route.
UNCW next on list
The lack of a "drunk bus" to and from campus has long been a complaint of the student body at UNCW. Wilmington Shuttle representatives are hoping to partner with UNCW in the near future to provide students living on campus the late bus service.
Similar shuttles can be found in other college towns, offering safe rides to and from downtown areas, in hopes to reduce drinking and driving. Representatives of the Wilmington Shuttle say the new bus route not only benefits students, but anyone of any age living in and around the bus stops.
"College students are probably gonna be the number one group of individuals that will benefit. They are the ones that are going downtown more on Friday and Saturday nights," said Michael Faulkner, Operations Manager of the Wilmington Shuttle service.
For those of you hoping to take advantage of the shuttle service, but not on the bus route there is a way for you to demand its service. Cast your vote at www.WilmingtonShuttle.com and your area could soon find its way on the route if demand shows its need.
The shuttle will be funded by advertisers and ride fares. $5 will get you a one way ride on the bus. Advertising is available to local businesses inside bus.
