OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – Fire crews in the town of Oak Island will soon be better equipped to save your life. Town council recently gave two thumbs up to a plan allowing firefighters to be certified as paramedic first responders.
They'll have medical equipment and additional training for emergency responses.
The Assistant Fire Chief, Steve Conway told us the crews will be better prepared and will help take the pressure off county emergency service teams.
"It provides a higher level of service," said Conway. "The county is very busy and they do a great job. They help us out a lot and we help them on the island. But the more definitive care we can provide, that's what we want to do."
The deal isn't done yet. Fire officials in Oak Island will continue to work out the details with emergency service officials at the county level until the plan is finalized.
