WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Organizers of a well-known community event are in a bind. Riverfest volunteers say they lost some major financial support and are asking for help.

The event began in 1979 and now draws nearly a quarter-million people, according to the event's website.

Riverfest is a three-day fundraiser to provide scholarships to students in the Marine Science program at Cape Fear community College.

This year, the family-fun celebration will be held October 4-6 and has expanded down Water Street to Chandler's Wharf.

The event features about 200 craft and food vendors, entertainment on two stages, various exhibits, a children's area and a fireworks show Saturday night.
