WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – Whiteville Police Chief Jerry Britt has been temporarily reassigned to the role of Assistant to the City Manager for Police and Administrative Affairs.

According to City Manager Larry Faison, the move stems from a number of personal hardships Britt has endured regarding the health of a loved one and his personal wellbeing.

"Jerry and I mutually agree in taking this step to preserve the wellbeing of the department and its high up-tempo operation," said Faison. "I support the Chief during these hardships, however we both realize the welfare of our WPD and its ability to carry on with the day to day requirements of staffing and operations in support of providing for the public's safety requires the utmost sustained attention of the Chief. "

Faison said Lt. Mark McGee will be the acting police chief. These temporary transfers were made Tuesday and will remain indefinitely.
