Big tires help Valley kids get into shape

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

It isn't your average physical education class - a new workout has middle school students breaking a sweat.

The program that uses big tires to help kids get into shape was started by the Amenzone Foundation.

The workout regime is about exercising but the founder, Amen Iseghohi, also teaches the kids about nutrition and self-esteem.

Iseghohi created the Amenzone Foundation to fight childhood obesity.

The idea to use tires during a workout came from his childhood. Iseghohi spent a lot of time with his grandmother in West Africa.

"She just didn't like seeing lazy boys around the house and in the compound in Africa, all we had were tires and she said, 'There are no excuses, we use what's in our environment,'" said Iseghohi.

Another lesson Iseghohi passes on to the students is to be confident.

"If you look at our program, we focus a lot of self-esteem. If you don't feel good about yourself, you couldn't care less what you put in your bodies and your body is a castle," said Iseghohi.

Robert Sotelo, a middle school student, wants to go to college, join the military and have a successful career when he graduates from high school.

He said Iseghohi has taught the class to keep trying, no matter what happens.

"Sometimes I might get out of balance but he then he tells us, 'It's not how you start, it's how you finish' so I kind of get more pumped up and I start working harder," said Sotelo.

The program is now in several schools across the Valley. United Healthcare has sponsored two schools.
