SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – According to Mayor Robert Howard, the city of Southport is moving forward with plans to build an alternative route out of town.
The NC DOT originally told city leaders it would take 8-10 years to begin work on a new exit road.
The board of alderman decided they couldn't wait that long.
Mayor Howard says they've been working with private investors and wrapping up negotiations.
They hope to break ground in a matter of weeks.
