COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Pineapple. It's a symbol of friendship and is a rare sight for farmers in Southeastern North Carolina, but French Worley made it happen.
Worley, a farmer in Fair Bluff, has been trying to grow a pineapple for half a decade. This year he finally succeeded!
The farmer said a former teacher triggered the idea to grow the tropical fruit, but it's a rare thing to do in the area.
Worley said he made sure his crop was in 80 degree weather or warmer to help the crop grow, and he was able to get one pineapple sprout.
This is the harvesting season for pineapples, so Worley is hoping he will be able to grow more next year.
