WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Work continues on the Wilmington Firefighter Memorial located in Front of Empie Park.
The foundation for the memorial has been dug out and filled in with concrete and crews are waiting to install the rest of the elements.
This project is funded through donations and they need $25,000 to reach to reach their goal. WFD is hosting the Second Annual Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 7 to help raise money for the memorial. Early registration is $100 and registration the day of the event is $125.
According to the WFD website, the memorial will honor the seven Wilmington firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty since the department began in the mid 1800s, as well as the 343 NYC firefighters who perished during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack.
Crews will place seven statues around the memorial which will represent Wilmington's fallen firefighters. The statues will hold a piece of steel recovered from the 9-11 World Trade Center attack.
A dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
