BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – For most people, Labor Day provides a much needed extra day of rest, but not everyone took the day off.
Elbert Gore was born in Brunswick County in 1927. He's been a military man, a family man, and a handy man. At 86 years old, he's still working and still sharp as a tack.
Gore spent his Labor Day installing electrical wiring for a new house under construction in Supply. However, he wasn't always a handy man, Gore served in the military for more than four years and two American wars.
"They tried to get me in the Marines, but I didn't want to do that," said Gore. "I didn't want to go to the Army because I didn't want to sleep in the woods, so I went to the Navy to sleep in a bed!"
After he was discharged, Gore became a licensed electrician in 1960.
"It's not an easy test," said Gore. "You can study all you want to but they throw something in there to block you and you have to figure it out."
Gore went on to teach at Brunswick Community College for 16 years, now he has a new way of doing business.
"A lot of people call me about a problem in their house and I'll come over to fix it because they're too scared to death," said Gore. "So, I'll fix it for them and I sometimes don't charge nothing."
Gore was a loyal husband for 56 years until his wife passed away. With many grandchildren, it's obvious to see that Gore is more than just an electrician.
"I mow my lawn -- keep my grass cut, keep my house up, I cook. I do my own cooking and sometimes I go out to a restaurant," said Gore. "I stay busy associated with a lot of women that I know and they know me, but we're just good friends."
Gore still needs to renew his electrician's license every year. His next training course will take place this winter. In the meantime, Gore says he plans to travel. He wants to go back to Puerto Rico in November, where he served when he was in the Navy more than 60 years ago.
Gore says he hopes to continue helping his community as long as he lives.
