News Release from UNCW Athletics:
GREENVILLE, North Carolina – Junior Ashley Stokes scored twice in the first half to lead UNCG to a 2-0 victory over UNCW in collegiate women's soccer action Monday in the ECU Soccer Tournament at the ECU Soccer Stadium.
Playing a rescheduled game after the original contest was postponed due to weather following 53 minutes of play on Sunday, the Spartans improved to 3-1 on the season while the Seahawks slipped to 0-4 on the campaign. Both teams are back in action Friday. UNCW returns to Greenville to face East Carolina while UNCG travels to High Point. Kickoff for both contests is set for 7 p.m.
"I felt we played hard today," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "It was challenging coming back from having a 2-0 lead before being postponed yesterday and I was proud of our effort, given it was our third game in four days. We have to keep working and not give up early goals. We need to build on the good stuff we did today. The key is to keep getting better."
Stokes staked UNCG to a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute as she corralled a loose ball inside the box and placed it inside the right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Cary product would double the Spartans advantage at the 27:34 mark, converting a breakaway opportunity created on a pass by freshman Georgia Brown.
UNCW held a slim 9-8 shot advantage in the contest and attempted all five corner kicks awarded.
Jamie Simmons recorded her second shutout of the season for the Spartans as she made three stops. Freshman Liisa Rahkola got the start in goal for the Seahawks and recorded four saves.
