DELCO, NC (WECT) – Just days before classes are set to begin, SEGS Academy, a new charter schools in Columbus County, received a certificate of occupancy that will allow it to open Tuesday as planned.
Waties Greene, the county's chief building inspector, said the certificate was issued Friday after the health department approved the school's new septic system.
Principal Renee Miles said Monday that 102 students were enrolled in Kindergarten through sixth grade, but officials with the Columbus and Bladen county school systems said Thursday that at least 18 students who planned to attend the charter school will be attending their schools instead.
"SEGS Academy seeks to emphasize personalized learning and increasing access to globally competitive education for students," according to the school's website. "The school will work to ensure that students have successful early experiences with math and science, thus encouraging confidence in the areas that are needed to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields."
SEGS' charter application indicates the school plans to add one grade level each year, teaching 1,000 students in its seventh year of operation.
