PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The father whose 3-month-old son died after being locked in a hot car is suspected of smoking marijuana before finding his child unconscious.

Daniel Bryant Gray, 31, was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on charges of manslaughter and child abuse Thursday, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Phoenix police said Daniel Gray allegedly smoked marijuana with another person and lost track of time while his son, Jamison Gray, sat in the hot car outside of BT's Sports Pub near Scottsdale and Thunderbird roads for about an hour Wednesday, Thompson said.

Gray took the unresponsive child into the bar, where he is a kitchen manager, and called 911 just before noon, Thompson said.

Daniel Gray and the first officer to arrive at the scene tried to revive the child before an ambulance arrived, Thompson said.

Gray initially told police he stopped at the bar to check on the business and that he got distracted, but investigators later developed information that led them to believe Daniel Gray and a companion were smoking pot while the child sat alone in the car in the parking lot, Thompson said.

The temperature at nearby Scottsdale Airport was 102 degrees at noon.

A relative of Jamison Gray established a memorial fund in his name at themamacurd.blog.com.
