According to police, a woman was leaving her business on Old Eastwood Road and walking to her car, when a man she didn't know snuck up behind her and hit her in the head with a hammer. WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating reports of an armed robbery that happened overnight.

According to police, a woman was walking to her car near Old Eastwood Road, when a man she didn't know snuck up behind her and hit her in the head with a hammer.

Police said the suspect told the victim he had a gun, and a witness in the area started firing shots at the man.

Authorities said the man took off with a purse in a vehicle described as a small silver Honda SUV. It was parked in the Hampton Inn parking lot, and the suspect headed south on Old Eastwood Road.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment. There is no word on her condition at this time.
