TABOR CITY, NC (WECT) – It was a big surprise for a longtime resident of Columbus County.
Tabor City resident Jack Miller was suppose to make some comments about one of the town's residents, but instead of having the chance to talk about her, Miller found out he was the one being honored.
Mayor Royce Harper presented Miller with the "keys to the city" as an event held at the Tabor City Visitors Center.
Miller recently retired as the morning announcer at WTAB Radio, where he worked for 38 years and had recently become its owner. Known by thousands of listeners as the "Morning Mayor of Tabor City", Miller said he had no idea he was the person his friends turned out to honor.
"I am completely shocked, but I am grateful," said Jack Miller, after receiving the "Keys of the City" by Harper. "But I have been blessed by the Lord, I have," said Miller.
Mayor Harper had nothing, but praise for his longtime friend.
"We would be lost without him. Jack has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce and actually the Chamber's President and has helped with other events for many years," said Tabor City Mayor Royce Harper. "If something comes up and you are looking for someone to help, Jack Miller is your man," said Harper.
And even though he is retiring from radio, he is not leaving other duties, including a member of the Board of Directors of Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation and a member of the annual North Carolina Yam Festival, which will be held in Tabor City on October 26.
