CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - A man found deceased on Carolina Beach Friday died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to a preliminary autopsy from the County Medical Examiner's Office.
Officials said they received a call around 6:30 a.m. that a man approximately 35 years old was found unresponsive on the beach in front of the Beach House Inn.
Two witnesses, who were there patrolling for turtle nests, say they walked up where a woman had just found the body.
One of the witnesses, who is a nurse, pulled him out of the water. She saw a large entrance wound in the front right side of the victim's head, above the ear. The witness did not see a weapon and says no one saw or heard anything at the nearby condo.
According to the witness, the body was limber when she moved him out of the water. She checked for a pulse, but there was none.
Residents in the area say they didn't hear anything abnormal. One person thinks the deceased man could have been a resident at the Seagull Rooms Apartments across the street, but that information has not been confirmed by officials.
The identity has not yet been released and the investigation is ongoing.
