SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) – Rescue workers in Sunset Beach say they're having trouble responding to emergency calls in the ocean due to clutter on the beach.
Sunset Beach Fire Chief Kevin Dempsey says too many tents and canopies are blocking their paths and delaying emergency response times.
He showed pictures of the problem to town leaders Tuesday.
Dempsey says people like to set up tents right next to each other – creating problems when emergency crews have to quickly respond to an incident in the water.
Town leaders made it clear they have no intention of banning tents or canopies, but they are considering some changes to the rules on how many tents can be in a specific area at one time.
Dempsey said Sunset Beach is growing rapidly, so this problem is quickly becoming a safety issue.
"If you're out there and you're sick or hurt, you want us to come right to you," said Dempsey. "You don't want to sit there and watch us finagle four or five tents so we have to come up with some space. That's all I'm asking."
Dempsey also says they're looking at how much it would cost to buy smaller emergency vehicles to allow them to scoot through the sand quicker.
