WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington City Council is still concerned with plans for a regional branding initiative headed by city staff and representatives from UNCW.
The initiative was discussed by city council members Monday at council agenda brief. Initiative supporters will present more information on their branding goals during Tuesday's meeting.
Laura Padgett, a member of Wilmington City Council, said she is uneasy about the idea.
"We want the uniqueness and value of living in or near the city of Wilmington to come through in this process and without their stating that they have that interest too, we don't know that that's going to happen," said Padgett.
She said the council is also concerned over how one single brand name will be chosen to represent downtown Wilmington, the area beaches, and northern Brunswick County. She also thinks council members should be involved in the decision-making processes for the creation of the branding initiative.
"I feel like it's being rushed at us and there's a certain level of discomfort that we would be asked to put our endorsement on something without knowing what that something is," she said.
Padgett said council has asked that branding developers give them a list of stakeholders from the community who are already on-board with the initiative.
