Cairo's J.J. Wilcox leaves Cowboys camp following mother's death

CAIRO, GA (WALB) -

Cairo's J.J. Wilcox returned home from this week from Dallas Cowboys camp after his mother passed away Tuesday after battling lupus.

The former Syrupmaker was drafted this spring in the third round of the NFL Draft. After playing three years on the offensive side of the ball, Wilcox moved to defense for his senior year. His parents, played a crucial role in helping Wilcox go through with the change that put him in the pros.

"Being 3 years on the offense, and being captain my junior year, I thought I got a sense of it, starting picking it up a bit, I thought my shot in the NFL was through offense," Wilcox said. "I called my parents, they told me to fight through it and take it as a challenge, I ran with it and it helped me out."

Wilcox has 13 tackles and 1 interception so far this preseason.
