Gamecocks 6th in AP Top 25 Football Poll

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS/AP) -

The University of South Carolina Gamecocks are ranked 6th in the Associated Press Top 25 Preseason Football Poll. It is the highest preseason ranking for the Gamecocks on school history.

"I hope we can live up to it," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "It's flattering. I don't know if we can live up to it or not, but we'll try."

Clemson is ranked 8th.

SEC opponent and two-time defending National Champion Alabama tops the poll, followed by Ohio State, Oregon and Georgia.

Texas A&M, Clemson, Louisville and Florida complete the top 10.

The USA Today Coaches Poll ranks South Carolina at 7th and Clemson 8th.

South Carolina opens the season Thursday, August 29th, hosting North Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks were ranked ninth in last year's A.P. preseason poll.

Alabama received 58 of the 60 first-place votes, easily distancing second-ranked Ohio State, which took one of the remaining two top nods. The Buckeyes finished last season 12-0, but were ineligible for postseason play.

The Gamecocks finished the 2012 season with a school-record 11 wins for the second-straight season. They ended the season ranked eighth in the final A.P. poll, their highest finish in school history.

Single game tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Monday, August 19, at 10 a.m. Approximately 3,000 tickets remain for the August 29 opener against North Carolina.
