WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – An elderly woman has been charged with a safe movement violation following a three-car crash that backed up traffic for mile than a mile Friday.

According to a spokesperson for the Wilmington Police Department, around 1:30 p.m., 77-year-old old Wilma Welch Thompson attempted to make a U-turn heading north on South College Road, then collided with a vehicle.

The crash caused a chain reaction, which damaged another vehicle. Traffic was backed up for around 45 minutes.

One person was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators estimate that the crash caused more than $13,000 in damage.
