WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – This weekend, anyone who wants to sell their illegal guns can with no questions asked.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, three churches have agreed to be location sites for the Proutey-Greene Gun Buyback effort.

Anyone who turns in a gun will be offered $100 for working handguns and $200 for assault weapons. The money will be in the form of VISA gift cards or cash.

Police ensure law enforcement officers will be on site to collect the guns.

The event is in memory of 19-year-old Josh Proutey and 8-year-old Demetrius Greene, who were both killed by guns.

The gun buyback effort is scheduled Saturday, August 24, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and will be held at the following churches:

  • Warner Temple AMEZ Church - 620 Nixon Street, Wilmington NC - Pastor Clifford Barnett, Sr.
  • Grace United Methodist Church - 401 S. Grace Street, Wilmington, NC - Pastor Scott Dodson
  • St. Andrews AMEZ Church - 1201 S. 9th Street, Wilmington, NC - Pastor Henry Gregory III

The effort will be hosted by LINC Incorporated a local non-profit agency whose goal is to educate and motivate youth to make positive life choices.
