COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Columbus County Sheriff's Deputies seized eight illegal electronic gaming machines Thursday from a business behind the Time Saver gas station outside of Whiteville on James B. White Highway, officials say.
They also took 18 machines from a business outside of Tabor City, and a dozen Pot of Gold machines from 183 Tom Sessions Road outside of Whiteville.
Authorities also took eight additional machines in the New Hope community. That brings the total of machines seized on Thursday to 46.
According to Sheriff Chris Batten, the businesses do not display a name out front, which allows the owners to try and hide what they're doing.
Batten says that when all sweepstakes became illegal earlier this year, their owners were given a grace period, but now, there are no excuses.
He says the owners and sweepstakes operators will be charged.
