2 accidents caused traffic jam near Isabel Holmes Bridge, 1 taken to hospital

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Traffic was backed up on US 421 near the Isabel Holmes Bridge Thursday morning as the result of two separate accidents.

First, a tractor trailer and SUV were involved in a crash around 6:30 a.m., according to New Hanover County Dispatch.

Dispatch said there were no serious injuries from that accident.

According to Trooper Philips, a motorcycle was driving in the southbound lane of US 421 toward traffic that was already backed up from an accident that happened earlier in the morning.

Philips said the driver tried to slow down, but lost control of the motorcycle. The front wheel stopped and the driver was ejected from the bike.

According to officials, the motorcycle driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Doctors say the helmet saved him from having life-threatening injuries.

The driver will be charged with failure to maintain lane control, unsafe tire, and no motorcycle endorsement from the Department of Transportation.
