PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Across the state, as counties are switching to the new NC Fast System, many people are having to wait weeks to get their food stamps.
Officials in Pender County apologized for the possible delays to those in their area, posting a release on the government website.
Administrators at the Department of Social Services say the delays are caused by employees learning how to use the new system, and also by the system itself.
They say that it moves slow, sometimes freezing for as long as several days, and that when it's frozen, it forces them to wait to enter in clients' food stamp applications, renewals and even changes.
Officials say they are working as hard as they can to make sure people get their benefits as quickly as possible.
They say they are working overtime and even on Saturdays to do all they can for their clients.
At this point, they say the most people have had to wait several weeks, and that while a handful of people have been inpacted, the delays could get worse. However, once the new system is fully functioning, it will speed the process up.
Anyone with unusually long delays is asked to contact his or her case worker.
