CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) - A man shot several times Friday in Chadbourn died just before midnight, Monday night.
According to officials, Rasheed Cherry was shot several times Friday near the Fired Up Number Two gas station. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and he died a few days later.
Police say Dehundra Spearman will now face murder charges in connection to Cherry's death.
Another shooting took place Saturday in Chadbourn at a woman's home.
The town's police chief believes the shootings could be related to a gang named, Zone 6. He would like to see the town re-hire a gang officer for the community.
"His only job was to investigate drug and gang activity," said Police Chief Steven Shaw. "When we had that officer that did that, our crime rate dropped. We had five years of the lowest crime rate Chadbourn has ever had."
According to Town Manager Stevie Cox, town officials will consider reinstating a church and town gang crime task force.
"We know some of the pastors actually have a much better feel and can reach people in the community in the way as we can't," said Cox.
Three years ago, Chadbourn had to eliminate two police officer positions for budget reasons. Cox says that they will discuss possibly working with other towns and agencies to utilize better resources.
According to Shaw, he has spoken with Columbus County Sheriff Chris Batten about using some of the sheriff's office resources. Shaw says that he understands people's concerns, and he believes they will have all the shootings resolved by the end of the week.
Some churches in Chadbourn are in the process of planning community events they believe will help curb the violence.
Town officials are expected to talk about ideas at next month's council meeting.
