WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Two homeless men are accused of trying to abduct a four-year-old girl Saturday afternoon in the 1200 block of South 15th Street in Wilmington, according to Linda Rawley with the Wilmington Police Department.
According to police, officers responded to a call around 2:00 p.m. that Robbie Nance tried to walk away with the girl.
Officials say the girl was playing outside the Motown Mini Mart while her grandmother was inside. According to police, the child said Nance approached her, asked her personal questions, and then asked if she wanted to go with him in the woods where he lived.
Police said the girl walked about 20 feet with Nance when they were joined by another man, David Newman.
According to authorities, someone saw what was going on and stopped the little girl, and then went inside the store to notify the child's grandmother.
Police said a group of citizens grabbed Nance as the pair was trying to leave the area. Officers were able to find Newman a short time later.
Both Nance and Newman were arrested and charged with child abduction. The investigation is ongoing.
