BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The owner of a boat that was found Wednesday morning on Holden Beach has cleared up the mystery of what happened.
Joshua Smith of Bolivia says he went out in his boat Monday afternoon with two other people, when the boat started taking on water about twenty miles offshore. Smith says the fiberglass delaminated, causing the boat to capsize and sink.
Smith says he called the US Coast Guard and Sea Tow, but a recreational fisherman picked the three people out of the water and brought them back to shore. According to Smith, he then contracted with a company to salvage the boat, but before that happened a commercial fisherman towed the boat toward shore. Smith believes the boat was damaged in the shallow waterway and ended up on the beach.
According to Police Chief Wally Layne, officers treated the boat as abandoned property when it was discovered on the beach, and had it towed to a wrecker company. Smith says he has since paid $250.00 to the towing company to reclaim his boat.
