NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Residents in the Porters Neck area will soon have another shopping option - one that promises "always low prices."
New Hanover County Commissioners approved plans Monday night for a new Walmart, giving developers the green light to move forward with construction.
The store will be go up in the 8000 block of Market Street.
Residents in the Country Haven and Sea Mist communities came out to the meeting Monday night to oppose the plan. They say it will create too much traffic and congestion near their neighborhoods.
Developers will have to follow more than a dozen conditions including working on road improvements entering the site.
Commissioner Tom Wolf says this a good move for the Porter's Neck area.
"We know that we're going to have economic growth in the northern part of the county," Wolfe said. "We know we have to do something with the market street corridor. This is a good time for the county, developer, and the state DOT to put the infrastructure in that is needed."
Commissioners approved the plan unanimously.
