WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A 21-year-old man has been charged with first degree rape and assault on a female, according to a spokesperson for the Wilmington Police Department.
U.S. Marshals picked up Josue Javier Fernandez Barrios, of Honduras, in Savannah, Georgia around 9 a.m. Friday morning.
Barrios is accused of raping a woman shortly after midnight Saturday morning in Wilmington, NC, then assaulting another woman around the same time Sunday.
Police say the reported incidents took place in the 1800 block of Market Street and the 3600 block of Princess Place Drive.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, Barrios was questioned by authorities in Wilmington, but was not arrested at that time. WECT obtained a copy of an email sent to WPD staff, which reveals that a WPD officer approached Barrios Wednesday night.
The officer noticed Barrios following three females and displaying suspicious behavior, and he felt that Barrios matched the description of the suspect involved in the reported Market Street rape. The email says that Barrios didn't commit any crimes in the presence of the officer, so he was released; however, a mobile field force followed him back to his residence.
The U.S. Marshal's Office in Savannah said they got a tip Friday morning that Barrios was near the Greyhound bus station. They found him sitting on a wall by the bus station.
According to authorities, U.S. Marshals took him down and arrested Barrios without a struggle. They believe Barrios arrived in Savannah Thursday and was on the way to Miami.
Barrios is being held at the Chatham County Jail, awaiting extradition.
