BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A sergeant at the Brunswick County Detention Facility has been arrested and charged, accused of assaulting an inmate.

Henry Michael Williams, 51, of Bolivia, faces one count of simple assault after allegedly pushing former inmate James Matthew Cain down to the ground while Cain was in leg restraints Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.

The State Bureau of Investigation charged Williams based on an investigation requested by Sheriff John Ingram, and Williams, who had been a detention officer at the jail since 2002, has also been fired following the alleged incident.

Cain was in jail after being charged with misuse of 911 system. He was released Wednesday under a $1,000 bond.

Williams was released on a $500 bond.
