COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend with a kitchen knife last week has been arrested and charged, according to the Columbus County District Attorney's Office.
The DA's office said Phiffany Bellamy was arrested Wednesday and charged with the murder of Derrick Howard on July 26.
Police said Bellamy, who was armed with a kitchen knife, was fighting Howard, who was armed with a metal rod.
According to Bellamy, Howard swung the rod towards her head. She ducked and then stabbed him. Bellamy says she was only trying to scare him and that it was self defense.
Bellamy said the couple had been together for six years, and Howard was upset because he couldn't fix a financial problem he was going through by himself.
Bellamy says this was the first time something like this has ever happened between her and Howard.
Chadbourn police say they've never been called to the house for a domestic situation.
According to officials, three children and a grandmother were inside the home when the incident happened.
