BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Some law enforcement officers in our area are now better prepared to deal with a psychiatric crisis.

Fourteen different law enforcement officers from the area graduated from the crisis intervention training class on Friday - a program sponsored by Coastal Care out of Wilmington.

Seven different agencies took part in the forty hour training course.

Participants underwent a crash course on the signs and symptoms of mental health, personality disorders, substance abuse, and other mental health issues.

Officers say this style of community based law enforcement will make them better at their jobs.

Caswell Beach Police Captain Sam Massey said, "After taking this course, I now have more options to offer people rather than taking them to jail or a costly trip to the hospital that will cost taxpayers money."

The next training course will be offered for school resource officers at the Coastal Care Center in Wilmington, August 5-9.
