BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A teacher from South Brunswick High School is facing animal cruelty charges.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office and Brunswick County Schools, those charges are related to depriving poultry and turkeys of necessary sustenance.

Beke M. Lindsay is now facing three charges of animal cruelty, and the birds involved were being used as part of educational research for a project entitled The Science of Fertilizer.

Lindsay is an agricultural teacher in the career-technical education program at South Brunswick High School. She has been placed on administrative leave at the school until further notice.

Superintendent Dr. Edward Pruden said in a press release the school board regrets the incident happened on school property and the people responsible for the cruelty will be held accountable.
