Dozens rally against voter bill in Downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens gathered in Downtown Wilmington to protest House Bill 589, which protesters say will make it harder for people to vote.

Protesters are concerned because the bill cuts early voting time by one week. They also worry that it will create longer lines.

Protestors explained that when a similar measure was adopted in Florida, people had to wait up to six hours before they were allowed to cast their ballot.

Members of the New Hanover Board of Elections say if the bill is signed into law, the early voting changes would not take effect until the 2014 elections.
