CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – We're learning more about why a Carolina Beach Police Sergeant was fired.

According to a letter we obtained sent from former Police Chief Kurt Bartley to Sgt. Chris Chafin, an investigation revealed that Chafin violated department policy.

In the letter, dated July 1, Bartley writes that Chafin falsified his time sheet, something he had been reprimanded for doing in the past.

It also states he left the island without telling a supervisor and regularly was late for work or left early.

According to the letter, Chafin was also found to have his son or other unauthorized passengers in his patrol car. The investigation found he apparently used his emergency lights to get through traffic because he was late to a meeting.

Chafin appealed his termination from the department. His hearing has been rescheduled to next Monday.
