BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An internal investigation has been launched into the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office over a case of smuggled contraband.

The investigation stems from an inmate who snuck his cell phone into jail.

An anonymous viewer originally reached out to us with concerns over the food and living conditions at the Brunswick County Jail, and the inmate captured some pictures inside the jail.

According to law enforcement, each inmate is strip searched when they arrive, but this inmate told us he hid the phone by cupping it in his hand to get by security.

A spokesperson for the sheriff's office says they found surveillance video of the inmate tossing the phone to a fellow inmate.

According to the intake policy, that is a security breach. The sheriff's office monitors all phone calls and visitors for inmates.

Mark Francisco, the Internal Affairs Officer for the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says they could issue administrative punishment to one or more intake officers if they are found to be guilty of negligence.

Francisco says he believes that no criminal activity or negligence was committed by the officers on duty.

He says they plan to be more vigilant when it comes to enforcing the rules and use this as a teaching tool for officers when they get overwhelmed.
