WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – An accidental gunshot inside the Columbus Regional Healthcare System Hospital in Whiteville has sparked an internal investigation and review by the NCDPS Safety Office.
According to a spokesperson for the NCDPS, two correctional officers were in a hospital room on the sixth floor with an inmate.
One of the officers passed his gun to the other in order to help the inmate to the restroom. When the officer returned the inmate to bed, the officer retrieved his weapon and it fired while he was putting it in the holster.
The NCDPS said the bullet was found lodged in the floor of the hospital room and no one was hurt.
According to the NCDPS, the officer is temporarily assigned to duty that does not require a weapon until the investigations are complete.
