BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – House and Senate leaders reached an agreement on a $20.6 billion state budget Sunday, according to a news release on behalf of Senate President Phil Berger and Thom Tillis, Speaker of the House.
That budget calls for the elimination of the Bladen Correctional Center, which is a 172-bed minimum custody facility.
If the budget is passed, the facility will close Oct. 1.
Officials behind the budget say the closure is part of a reduction in prison capacity to reflect the declining prison population.
Closing the facility will save tax payers around $2.5 million a year.
