CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – A simple seafood dinner did a lot more than feed a few customers Sunday night in Carolina Beach.
An oyster roast from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Surf House benefited a scholarship to Cape Fear Community College in honor of Michael McGowan. The late chef and owner of Michael's Seafood in Carolina Beach passed away last October.
Craig Love, owner of the Surf House, said he only knew McGowan for a short time but could quickly understand the late chef's influence on Pleasure Island.
"You knew kind of the impact he had on the community – his community impact and activism and really rallying around the food community," said Love.
The scholarship will keep money in the food community, as it will benefit the Culinary Arts program at CFCC.
Organizers hope the total scholarship amount will reach $20,000. Plates at Sunday's event cost $35.
